European Rights Chief Calls For Halt Of Forced Returns To Kosovo

Thomas Hammarberg

The Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights, Thomas Hammarberg, has released a statement calling on European countries to "stop the forced returns until Kosovo can provide adequate living conditions, health care, schooling, social services, and employment."

The UN reported some 2,500 people were returned from European countries during 2009.

Hammarberg also referred to the reports made public last week about two lead-contaminated refugee camps in Kosovo and called for the closure of the camps.
