Exit Polls Suggest Latvian Government Reelected

Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis looked set to stay in power.

Exit polls show Latvia's center-right government winning reelection with about 55 percent of the vote.

The polls by the BNS news service and LTV television showed the main challenger -- the pro-Russia Harmony Center party -- winning about 30 percent of the vote.

If result stands, it would likely mean that Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis stays in power at the helm of a coalition of center-right parties that took office in March 2009 after the previous government collapsed amid political and economic turmoil.

Issues in the campaign have included how to revive the Latvian economy, which contracted by 18 percent in 2009 in the world's steepest recession of recent years.

Campaigning also focused on how Latvia should handle its 7.5 billion-euro bailout loan with the International Monetary Fund, which was agreed at the end of 2008 to help the country avoid bankruptcy.
