Independent Moldovan TV Station To Broadcast Through Elections

Moldova's media authority has postponed a controversial license tender that had threatened take the country's leading independent TV station, Pro TV, off the air, RFE/RL's Moldovan Service reports.

Moldova's Coordinating Council of the Audiovisual (CCA) said earlier this month that Pro TV's license would not be automatically extended when it expires on December 23 and the station would have to compete in a tender.

The Romanian-based Pro TV and its supporters challenged that decision, saying it was an attempt by the government to remove the station from the air ahead of parliament elections set for March.

But the CCA has announced there will be no tender until after the elections, and that Pro TV and other media are free to broadcast using their current licenses.
