Iran’s Police Remain Iran's Police

The new term for Iran's police, “pasvar,” had a very short life.

A day after the social deputy of Iran’s police force, Bahman Kargar, introduced "pasvar" and said that it would replace the term "police" (as I wrote yesterday), the public relation office of the police force said in a statement that the replacement has been nullified and that police remains police.

The statement said that following the announcement, Iran’s Academy of Language and Literature sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in which it raised some (unspecified) criticism over the new term.

Khamenei then ordered usage of the replacement word to be stopped.

The introduction of the new term, and its annulment just a day later, is a good example of how things work -- or don't work -- in the Islamic republic.
