Karzai Meets Top U.S. Officials

Richard Holbrooke, the U.S. special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan.

U.S. envoy Richard Holbrooke and senior general David Petraeus today met President Hamid Karzai in Kabul at a conference reviewing U.S. civilian and military involvement in Afghanistan.

They have discussed "shared challenges and opportunities ahead" in the country. The conference itself, involving senior U.S. and Afghan officials, plus key allied partners, comes after Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in January unveiled a long-term, non-military plan to stabilize Afghanistan and Pakistan.

The plan envisages a "surge" of civilian experts who in Afghanistan would help rebuild the fractured farm sector, implement governance programs and the reintegration members of armed opposition into society.
