OSCE Urges Ukraine To Ensure Safety Of Journalists

Dunja Mijatovic, the new OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media

The media wing of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) has urged Ukraine to investigate attacks on the press amid growing accusations of government pressure on the media.

Speaking in Kyiv on October 13, Dunja Mijatovic, the OSCE's media freedom representative, said she has "zero tolerance" for attacks on journalists and that "apart from condemnation of the attacks we need to see swift investigations."

Ukrainian journalists have warned of deteriorating press freedoms in their country since President Viktor Yanukovych took office in February.

The United States and the European Union have also raised concerns about deterioration of media freedoms in Ukraine.
