United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and U.S. President Barack Obama have marked the 65th birthday of Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi by renewing calls for Myanmar's military rulers to release the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
In a statement, Obama hailed Suu Kyi's "determination, courage, and personal sacrifice in working for human rights and democratic change" as she marks her birthday on June 19.
Separately, UN chief Ban said he remains "deeply concerned" that Suu Kyi is still under house arrest in Yangon. Suu Kyi has spent 15 of the last 21 years in detention because of her fight for democracy in the army-ruled country.
Her National League For Democracy Party won the country's last elections in 1990, but the military did not permit the party to take power. The United States has imposed sanctions on Myanmar over its human rights record.
