Queen 'Shocked' After Gunman Kills 12 In Rampage

Britain's Queen Elizabeth II says she's "deeply shocked" and shares the "grief and horror" of Britons following the killings of 12 people in an apparent shooting rampage by a taxi driver.

Police said the suspect, Derrick Bird, 52, is believed to have taken his own life after driving around and opening fire in at least 30 different locations during the three-hour spree in northwest England on June 2.

In addition to the 12 who were killed, at least 11 people were wounded in the shootings, including three who are now in critical condition.

Police said it was still too early to confirm what the killer's motive was, or whether the shootings had targeted people at random, as some reports have suggested.

British news reports today said the rampage in the Lake District may have been triggered by a family dispute, as one of the victims is reported to have been the suspected gunman's brother.

It was the deadliest shooting spree in Britain since 1996, when 16 children and their teacher were massacred in Scotland. Multiple shootings are considered rare in Britain, where handguns are officially banned.
