Rights Campaigner Gunned Down In Ingushetia

Maksharip Aushev was buried today.

Some 3,000 mourners gathered in the drizzle outside Nazran, Ingushetia's largest city, to say goodbye to the opposition campaigner.

Aushev was murdered on Sunday when his car was sprayed with bullets as he drove to visit family in the nearby republic of Kabardino-Balkaria.

Aushev's murder is just the latest in a string of killings this year aimed at rights workers in the volatile North Caucasus region.

On January 19, Stanislav Markelov, a lawyer working for the family of a Chechen girl murdered by a Russian Army colonel, was shot in central Moscow.

On July 15, Chechen activist Natalia Estemirova was murdered by unknown assailants.

In August, Zarema Sadulayeva, the head of a Chechen children's charity, and her husband, Alik Dzhabrailov, were found shot dead in the trunk of a car.
