Top U.S. Military Chief Visits Pakistan

U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Admiral Mike Mullen talks with journalists during a press conference in Kabul on December 14.

The United States' top military officer, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen, has had talks in Pakistan with that country's powerful army chief, General Ashfaq Kayani, on the new U.S. war strategy for Afghanistan.

Mullen arrived in Pakistan from Afghanistan late on December 15.

He is the latest top U.S. official to visit Pakistan to discuss President Barack Obama's recent decision to send an additional 30,000 U.S. forces to Afghanistan to battle a resurging Taliban.

Pakistan, which is already engaged in offensives against Islamic militants in the northwest, including areas near the Afghan border, fears the troop surge in Afghanistan will send militants into Pakistan.
