Ukrainian Official Arrested On Charges Of Bribe-Taking

DNIPROPETROVSK, Ukraine -- Ukraine's State Security Service (SBU) says a city official in the eastern city of Dnipropetrovsk has been caught accepting a $5,000 bribe, RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

SBU officials in Dnipropetrovsk said the acting chief of one of the city council's directorates accepted a bribe from the chief of a private transportation company in exchange for receiving a license for the firm to work in the city.

Authorities said the official, who was not named, was involved in a similar action before in which he was suspected of "assisting a private transportation company to win a tender to carry passengers in the city."

No criminal case was opened against the official in that instance.

But this time the official was arrested and an investigation launched into the incident.
