Uzbek Journalists Mark Media Day

Journalists in Uzbekistan are marking Media Day today amid growing international concern over the worsening situation for press freedom in the repressive Central Asian state.

As RFERL correspondent Alisher Sidikov writes, the running joke among journalists is that the Uzbek government is actually celebrating Victory Day over the country’'s free and independent media.

In the latest development, the prestigious Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany has announced the suspension of a 1-million euro European Union-backed program to train Uzbek journalists, citing problems with the government in Tashkent.

Observers say the case again throws into question the EU'’s policy of engagement with the government of Uzbek President Islam Karimov.
