Taliban militants have claimed responsibility for an attack involving suicide bombers on a U.S. base near Afghanistan's border with Pakistan.
A statement from NATO confirmed the base in the Torkham area of Nangarhar Province had been attacked early on September 2, adding that no members of the international coalition or Afghan security forces were killed.
At least three attackers were reported dead.
A spokesman for the governor of Nangarhar Province told news agencies that several militants wearing explosives attacked the base and at least one car bomb was used.
NATO helicopters were summoned to help repel the attack, which lasted about 3 1/2 hours.
The base is on the highway between Jalalabad and Torkham, an important NATO supply route.
The highway was closed during the attack.
Several NATO vehicles were reportedly destroyed.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid confirmed that Taliban fighters were responsible and claimed that militants had destroyed several tanks.
