Flash Flood Kills Scores In Afghanistan

A flash flood swept through villages in northern Afghanistan on May 11, killing at least 17 people.

The Associated Press puts the number of dead at 27.

Pajwok Afghan news agency reports that many victims are missing.

Abdul Jabar Taqwa, the governor of Takhar Province, said the flood occurred in Ishkamish District, a remote mountainous area accessible only by helicopter.

He said a powerful wave of water broke through a dam, washed down a valley, and struck several villages.

Earlier this week, high water flooded the village of Deh Murda in Sari Pul Province, killing 21 people, many of whom were members of a wedding party.

That flood destroyed at least 45 homes and damaged another 150.
