16 Killed In Taliban Attack On Police In Kandahar

The death toll has risen to 16 in an attack by the Taliban militia on a police headquarters in the Afghan city of Kandahar.

A spokesman, Zalmai Ayubi, for the provincial governor said the assailants were armed with automatic rifles and rocket-propelled grenades.

One of those killed was a civilian; the rest were Afghan policemen.

NATO and Afghan forces battled with the Taliban militants after the attack.

Kandahar Province is considered one of the strongholds of the Taliban and has been the focus of increased U.S. military efforts.
