U.S. scientists have announced that the lowest-ever temperature on Earth was recorded on the East Antarctica Plateau in August 2010.
The new record is minus-93 degrees Celsius, measured in pockets of trapped air on a high ridge.
Ice scientist Ted Scambos at the National Snow and Ice Data Center announced the discovery at a meeting of the American Geophysical Union in San Francisco on December 9.
Scientists made the discovery while analyzing 32 years of global surface temperatures.
However, Scambos said the new low won't be in the Guinness Book of World Records because the temperature was measured by satellites, not by thermometers.
The previous record low was minus-89.2 Celsius, set in 1983 at the Russian Vostok Research Station in East Antarctica.
