Insurgent Attack Ends In Afghan South

U.S. soldiers keep watch during gunfire near a U.S. base in Kandahar on October 27.

Afghan police say four insurgents and an Afghan interpreter working for the International Security Assistance Force died in fighting on October 27 when militants attacked a NATO base in Kandahar Province.

Kandahar Province police chief Abdul Raziq said the attack by Taliban militants on the provincial reconstruction team's base began in mid-afternoon and continued for an hour and a half.

"Afghan security forces killed all four Taliban, who were armed with heavy and light weapons," he added. "The police have already occupied the building and the situation is under control."

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack that included the use of rocket-propelled grenades and small arms.
