BAKU -- Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev has fired the governor of a region that was hit by riots last month.

Nizami Alekberov, the governor of the Ismayilli region, was dismissed by presidential decree on February 14.

In January, local residents rioted in the town of Ismayilli after a motoring incident involving the son of a cabinet minister.

Protesters set fire to cars and a motel owned by the minister's son and also demanded Alekberov's resignation.

Aliyev, in his first public reaction to the unrest, on February 12 warned government officials to behave properly or face serious consequences.

He also said that officials whose children mistreat and insult people will be dismissed.

Alekberov will be replaced as governor by Mirdamed Sadigov, the head of the Ganca Agricultural University.
