Karabakh Soldier Killed In Latest Clashes With Azerbaijani Forces

Separatist officials of Nagorno-Karabakh say one soldier of the unrecognized territory was killed in the latest clashes with Azerbaijani armed forces.

The breakaway region's de facto Defense Ministry said that the soldier was killed when "Nagorno-Karabakh armed forces fought with Azerbaijan's sabotage and reconnaissance group that tried to cross the border" early on December 4.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry condemned the breakaway region for what it called "an attempt to attack Azerbaijani positions."

In a statement, the ministry said one Azerbaijani officer was wounded in the clashes.

Baku and Yerevan have been locked in conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh for a quarter of a century.

Armenia-backed separatists seized the mainly ethnic Armenian-populated region during a war in the early 1990s that killed some 30,000 people.
