Azerbaijani Activists Detained Ahead Of Protest

Three student opposition activists have been detained in Azerbaijan ahead of a planned protest on March 10.

A joint statement from the National Security Agency and the Prosecutor-General's Office said the student activists were detained on March 6 after illegal drugs and bottles filled with flammable liquids were found during raids at their homes.

The activists were members of the opposition youth NIDA movement.

Their families say the charges were trumped up.

NIDA quoted the father of one of the arrested activists as accusing agents of planting the bottles.

The opposition has called a demonstration in Baku on March 10 to protest against the deaths and alleged abuse of military conscripts.

Twenty-two people were detained after a similar protest in Baku on January 12 organized by social media websites.
