United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today said the unrest in Egypt has "serious implications" for regional stability, particularly when it comes to the Middle East peace process.
Ban, speaking at a news conference in Munich, Germany, said it was important that Egypt's leaders listen to their people. He said, “Many international community members have also expressed their desire to see, first of all, this situation calm down, and peace and stability should be restored."
His comments came a day after meeting with the Middle East Quartet on the stalled Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. Ban praised Egyptian President Mubarak as a key player in the Israeli-Palestinian reconciliation process.
Also today, Pope Benedict XVI said he was praying Egyptians could find “tranquility and peaceful coexistence in the shared commitment for the common good."
