OKTYABRSKY, Russia -- Four alleged Islamic extremists were apprehended in the Russian republic of Bashkortostan today, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.
Bashkortostan's Interior Ministry announced that all of the detained suspects were from the town of Oktyabrsky. It said the detainees were between 23 and 35 years old. One suspect is a metalworker at an oil refinery in Oktyabrsky.
Police said the four were charged with illegal weapons possession, illegal production of explosives, and the intention to use explosives. They say that extremist literature, weapons, and material for making explosive devices were confiscated at the suspects' apartments in Oktyabrsky.
According to the official arrest report, one of the detained suspects is the leader of the so-called Oktyabrsky Jamaat, which is reportedly part of the self-proclaimed Caucasus Emirate. The Caucasus Emirate, led by Doku Umarov, is considered a terrorist organization by Russia.
Umarov this week claimed responsibility for the January 24 bombing attack at Moscow's largest airport, Domodedovo, that killed 36 people and injured dozens.
