A hearing to decide if U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl should face a military trial for leaving his post in Afghanistan has begun in San Antonio, Texas.
Lawyers for Bergdahl, who was held captive by the Taliban in Afghanistan for five years before being released in a controversial 2014 prisoner exchange, said the proceedings would reveal to the public the details of what led to the soldier's disappearance.
His lead attorney, Eugene Fidell, said he plans to call witnesses.
But he declined to say whether Bergdahl would be among them.
The proceedings that began on September 17 could last several days.
Before his disappearance, Bergdahl had expressed opposition to the war in general and misgivings about his own role in it.
Bergdahl was charged in March with desertion and misbehavior before the enemy.
If convicted, he could face a maximum penalty of life in a military prison.
