U.S. President Barack Obama has picked former President Bill Clinton to lead the U.S. delegation to this weekend's commemoration marking the 20th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre.
Some 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed in Srebrenica in 1995 when Bosnian Serb forces overran the eastern Bosnian town and carried out Europe's worst massacre since World War II.
The White House announced July 8 that Clinton will be joined by members of Congress and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. The commemoration is scheduled for July 11 in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Also attending will be Senators Roger Wicker and Jeanne Shaheen, and Representatives Eliot Engel and Peter King.
Bosnia's 1992-95 war played a central role in Clinton's foreign policy. After the massacre, Albright waved satellite photos of mass graves in Bosnia before the United Nations Security Council.
Clinton later advocated for the creation of the International Commission for Missing Persons, a Bosnia-based DNA identification project.
