Ukraine's Interior Ministry says it has launched legal proceedings against Dmytro Bulatov, an activist who says he was abducted and tortured, for his alleged involvement in Kyiv riots.
Bulatov, who was reported missing a week ago then reappeared late on January 30 bearing signs of beatings and possible torture.
Bulatov is in hospital in Kyiv under guard from both police and antigovernment demonstrators.
Ukrainian authorities say they are also investigating an attempted coup in connection with antigovernment protests held since November.
The Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) said on January 31 that evidence confiscated last month from the offices of the Fatherland party of jailed opposition leader Yulia Tymoshenko showed protesters intended to provoke police violence against demonstrators and undermine President Viktor Yanukovych's authority.
Fatherland said on February 1 that the announcement was a provocation meant to allow authorities to declare a state of emergency.
