Bulgaria's prime minister has announced that his country has abandoned plans for a Russian-built second nuclear power plant on the Danube River.
Boiko Borisov said on March 28 that Bulgaria has definitively abandoned plans to build a nuclear power plant in the town of Belene.
Bulgaria already has commissioned Russia's Atomstroyexport company to build the two 1,000-megawatt reactors for the plant but Borisov's center-right government has been delaying a final decision on the project amid wrangling over the price and failure to find a Western investor to join the project.
Bulgaria has said construction of the plant would cost at least $6.7 billion.
Borisov said he had already discussed Belene's fate with Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, adding he hoped Bulgaria and Russia will "remain friends" despite his government's decision to abandon the project.
