MONDAY, October 1:

Georgia: Parliamentary elections.

Kazakhstan: Astana hosts World Petroleum Council meeting (to October 3).

Russia: The Moscow City Court is set to hear an appeal by three members of the punk group Pussy Riot.

Russia: Moscow's Tverskoy Court is set to consider a ban on the anti-Muslim film "The Innocence Of Muslims."

UN: International Day of Older Persons.

UN: World Habitat Day.

UN: Armenian and Belarus officials to address the UN General Assembly in New York.

Uzbekistan/Turkmenistan: Uzbek President Islam Karimov visits Ashgabat (to October 2).

Council of Europe: Strasbourg hosts the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) autumn session (to October 5).


TUESDAY, October 2:

Bosnia-Herzegovina: Sarajevo hosts a South-East Europe Defense Ministers (SEDM) meeting (to October 4).

Russia/Council of Europe: PACE examines a report on Russia’s compliance with its obligations before the Council of Europe.

UN: International Day of Nonviolence.

World: The winner of the 2012 Martin Ennals award to be announced in Geneva.

World: The "World Development Report 2013" to be published by the World Bank.


WEDNESDAY, October 3:

Azerbaijan/Armenia: European Policy Center in Brussels hosts a discussion of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Iraq: Baghdad International Film Festival opens (to October 7).

Iraq: International Oil and Gas Conference and Exhibition opens in Baghdad (to October 5).

Russia/Georgia: A new round of talks between Russia and Georgia is scheduled to begin in Geneva.

U.S.: First presidential debate between U.S. President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to be held in Denver.


THURSDAY, October 4:

Azerbaijan: Baku hosts the International Humanitarian Forum (to October 5).

Turkmenistan/Azerbaijan: The third meeting of the Azerbaijani-Turkmen Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation to be held in Ashgabat.


FRIDAY, October 5:

Czech Republic: Ruzyne airport in Prague to be renamed after former President Vaclav Havel on the eve of would have been Havel's 76th birthday.

Russia/Tajikistan: Russian President Vladimir Putin pays an official visit to Dushanbe, which coincides with the 60th birthday of his Tajik counterpart, Emomali Rahmon.

UNESCO: World Teachers' Day.

World: France hosts the Strasbourg World Forum for Democracy (to October 11).
