Canadian Police Kill Man Allegedly Plotting Suicide Bombing

Canadian police have shot and killed a man who officials said was plotting a suicide bombing in a public area.

Dozens of police cruisers and armed officers could be seen late on August 10 in a neighborhood of Strathroy, a town about 225 kilometers southwest of Toronto.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police earlier said it had halted a possible attack after receiving credible information of a potential terrorist threat.

One senior police officials told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that the man was planning to use a bomb to carry out the attack in an unidentified public space.

Unnamed intelligence officials told Reuters, meanwhile, that the suspect was Aaron Driver, who was arrested last year for openly supporting Islamic State militants on social media.

Driver was not charged with a crime, but in February he was placed on a peace bond, a court order that restricted his movement.

The bond also required that he stay away from social media and computers and not have contact with Islamic State or similar groups.
