The U.S. Defense Department say charges of terrorism and murder have been refiled against 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and four other alleged co-conspirators.

The five were previously charged in connection with the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington, but the charges were dropped in 2009 when President Barack Obama's administration attempted to have the cases brought before federal civilian courts.

All five have been held at the U.S. facility at Guantanamo Bay.
