U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has met with Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi on the sidelines of a regional security forum in Indonesia.
Reports suggest their talks focused on tensions over competing territorial claims by countries along the resource-rich and highly strategic South China Sea.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin says Ying urged Clinton to "respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China" and to respect China's position on Tibet.
Clinton was expected to press China and members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to formalize a draft agreement they reached July 21 about their competing claims on the South China Sea.
Clinton arrived in Bali late on July 21 and was scheduled to hold talks with ASEAN foreign ministers there later the next day.
She also planned to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum on July 23 before traveling on to Hong Kong and mainland China.
Washington angered Beijing last week when President Barack Obama met with spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, whom Chinese officials regard as advocating Tibetan independence, at the White House on July 16.
