Hillary Clinton has arrived in Yemen on an unannounced visit, the first U.S. secretary of state to visit the Arabian Peninsula country in more than 20 years.
Yemen is facing a growing Al-Qaeda insurgency that is increasingly seen as a global threat, and Clinton is expected to press authorities to do more to tackle extremism.
Speaking to reporters before her plane landed in the capital, Sana'a, Clinton said her trip was to underscore U.S. support for the country and convince the government that the United States wants a broader dialogue, not just "military-to-military" relations in the fight against terror.
Clinton is not expected to announce any new aid for Yemen, but she said Washington wants to rebalance a $300 million aid package that is now weighted in favor of security and military assistance.
Upon arrival, Clinton told reporters that Washington is committed to a "balanced approach" that includes "social, economic, and political assistance."
