Venezuelan Opposition Leader Launches Attempt To Forcefully Oust Maduro

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido, whose claim to the presidency is backed by the United States and other countries, speaks with a man in uniform near the air base shortly after sunrise in the Venezuelan capital.

An armed man with a gas mask. According to Reuters, protests are planned for May 1, including what Guaido has said will be “the largest march in Venezuela’s history,” part of what he calls the “definitive phase” of his effort to take office in order to call fresh elections.

Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido said on April 30 that he is launching a “final phase” of his plan to oust President Nicolas Maduro, calling on Venezuelans and the military to back him to end Maduro’s “usurpation.”
