Josef Skvorecky, the Czech émigré writer and publisher, has passed away.
He died of cancer early on the morning of January 3 in Toronto. He was 87.
Skvorecky fled to Canada after the Soviet invasion in 1968. He and his wife, the writer and actress Zdena Salivarova, founded the publishing house 68 Publishers in 1971.
Over the next two decades, they published banned Czech and Slovak books.
Skvorecky’s own books had been banned in his homeland under communism.
His works include “The Cowards,” “The Emperor of Human Souls” -- which won the Canadian Governor-General’s Award in 1984 -- and “The Bass Saxophone.”
