Daghestani Security Forces Kill Man In Shoot-Out

Authorities in the restive republic of Daghestan in Russia's North Caucasus say a militant has been killed in the Khasavyurt district.

The man was holed up in a house in the village of Endirei and refused to surrender on October 11.

Security forces and police used firearms after the man started shooting at them and injured one of the police officers.

The alleged militant was identified as 22-year-old Khalimbek Khalimbekov.

He is the fifth suspected militant to have been killed by police in the Khasavyurt district since October 9.

On October 8, three suspected militants and a policeman were killed in two separate incidents in other Daghestani districts.

Violence is rising in Daghestan and other Russian republics in the majority-Muslim region of the North Caucasus.

Seven alleged militants were reported killed by security forces in Daghestan last week.
