Egyptians Protest Better Ties With Iran

Egyptian police try to remove an Islamist protester chanting slogans from the fence of the Iranian ambassador's house during a protest against Iran in Cairo on April 5.

A group of some 40 Egyptians have tried to storm the residence of Iran’s top diplomat in Cairo to protest against improving relations with Iran.

State media described the group as hard-line Islamists and said they threw stones and attempted to storm the residence of Amani Mojhtaba, the head of the Iran interest section in the Egyptian capital on April 5.

The group also protested a recent decision by Egyptian authorities to allow Iranians to visit Egypt for the first time in some 30 years.

The crowd outside the Iranian official’s residence chanted "Egypt is Sunni" and "No Shi'a in Egypt."

A group of Iranian tourists arrived in Egypt earlier this week but were only permitted to visit selected sites and were prohibited from visiting Cairo.
