EU Says Moldova Aid Depends On Judicial Reform

Dirk Schuebel

The European Union today called on Moldova to reform its judiciary system in order to secure some 550 million euros in aid.

Dirk Schuebel, the head of the EU's delegation to Moldova, told reporters in Chisinau that the bloc "will provide direct financial support for Moldova's budget only if we see progress [in judicial reform]."

He said judicial reform is "very important because Moldova's other sectors depend on it."

According to the EU's 2011-2013 program for Moldova, Chisinau is due to carry out reforms that would curb corruption and improve the investment climate in the country.
