Casualties After Fire, Blasts At Azerbaijani Weapons Depot

Smoke billows out from the site of the explosions.

A fire at a munitions depot in northern Azerbaijan has injured six people and forced the evacuation of several areas around the military installation after a series of explosions.

The Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a statement that the August 27 blasts occurred after a fire broke out at the weapons depot, about 70 kilometers north of the capital, Baku. Residents of Gilazi, Sitalchay, and other nearby settlements have been evacuated, it added.

“As a result of the measures taken, persons living and serving in the military unit were evacuated to a safe place. At about 1 p.m. [local time], six people working at the scene were slightly injured. There were no reports of other serious injuries or deaths," according to the ministry statement.

The statement added that a joint commission has been set up to investigate the incident “and implement appropriate security measures.”
