Fire In Russian College Dorm Kills Three

CHELYABINSK, Russia -- Three students have died in a fire in the dormitory of a teacher training college in the Urals city of Chelyabinsk, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

Chelyabinsk Fire Department officials told RFE/RL that they were notified about the fire at 4:00 a.m. About 100 students were evacuated from the building.

The Chelyabinsk Emergency Situations department told journalists that one of the rooms in the dormitory was on fire when firefighters arrived. The bodies of three female students were found after the blaze was extinguished.

A local prosecutor's office representative says the three girls were students from outlying villages. A preliminary investigation suggests they died of inhaling smoke.

Chelyabinsk Oblast Prosecutor General Aleksandr Voitovich told journalists that he is personally monitoring the investigation.
