The military trial of a U.S. Army officer charged with killing 13 soldiers has started under heavy security in Texas.
A military prosecutor told jurors during the opening day of the trial at Fort Hood base that Major Nidal Hasan planned to "kill as many soldiers as he could."
Hasan, an army psychiatrist, admits to the shooting rampage at Fort Hood in November 2009 and could face the death penalty if convicted.
More than 30 people were wounded in the shooting.
Hasan is representing himself at the court-martial.
He had suggested he would argue the killings were justified as they were meant to prevent the killing of others, namely Taliban militants fighting U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan, but the judge denied that strategy.
