France To Deploy Aircraft Carrier To Back Anti-IS Operations

France says it will deploy its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier to support operations against the Islamic State (IS) militant group in Syria and Iraq.

France's presidency made the announcement on November 5 following a defense cabinet meeting.

The presence of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier will add to the six Rafale fighter jets stationed in the United Arab Emirates and the six Mirages flying out of Jordan.

France launched air strikes against IS militants in Syria last month, after a year of bombing the extremist group in neighboring Iraq.

France says its jets have carried out 271 strikes in Iraq and two in Syria.
