Massacre In Northern Guatemala Leaves 27 Dead

Assailants have killed at least 27 people -- decapitating most of the victims -- on a ranch in a part of northern Guatemala plagued by drug cartels.

The bodies were discovered in Peten province, 500 kilometers north of the capital, Guatemala City.

The chief of police said the killings were probably linked to a battle between rival drug gangs fighting for control of the area.

Northern Guatemala is an important transit point for drugs smuggled from South America to the United States.
