The six member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have agreed to work toward the creation of a regional police force and a joint naval defense force.
Speaking after the GCC's annual summit in Doha on December 9, the Qatari foreign minister said the police force would improve cooperation against terrorism.
Reports said it is also expected to tackle drug trafficking, money laundering, and cybercrime.
No details were given on the planned joint naval force, which is expected to act as deterrence to regional foe Iran.
The grouping already has an emergency military force, which intervened in Bahrain to help the monarchy crush protests led by the Shi’ite majority in 2011.
The GCC groups Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates.
