The chief financier of the Taliban-linked Haqqani network militant group has been shot dead by unidentified gunmen in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad.
News agencies quote sources as saying that Nasiruddin Haqqani -- the son of Jalaludin Haqqani, the founder of the Haqqani network -- was killed on November 10 while traveling in a car. Reports say Haqqani's body will be taken to Miranshah in North Waziristan, where his funeral will be held later in the day.
In June 2010, the United States sanctioned Nasiruddin Haqqani and two other Afghans as "specifically designated global terrorists." The United States has also branded the Haqqani network as a terrorist organization, blaming it for a number of high-profile attacks in Afghanistan.
