Hong Kong police have unleashed repeated rounds of tear gas to clear a street blocked with thousands of democracy protesters in the city's government district.
The police action on September 28 comes just hours after Hong Kong's leader Leung Chun-Ying urged people not to participate in the protests and called them "illegal."
Students launched massive demonstrations beginning on September 26 to call for greater democracy and demand Leung meet them to discuss electoral reforms.
Leung has promised the government will launch a new round of consultations on electoral reform shortly.
But he has not provided a time-frame for consultations.
The protesters reject Beijing's recent decision to restrict voting reforms for the first-ever elections to choose the city's leader in 2017.
