India Accuses Pakistan Of Killing Soldier

India has accused Pakistan of firing across the two countries' disputed border and killing an Indian Army officer.

Indian Army spokesman S. N. Acharya said on June 7 that the shooting incident earlier in the day in the Poonch sector of the border, some 180 kilometers southwest of Srinagar, killed a junior commanding officer identified as Bachan Singh.

Acharya said the attackers used small arms and fired grenades at an Indian Army bunker but Acharya said it was not clear whether Pakistani troops or Kashmiri insurgents were responsible.

Another senior Indian Army officer Rajesh Kalia, who is stationed in Kashmir, said an investigation was underway and added Indian military forces responded in a "controlled manner" to the shooting without elaborating.

In a statement, Pakistan’s military denied its troops had fired across the border.
