India, one of the world’s largest emitters of greenhouse gases, has formally joined the Paris agreement on tackling climate change.
"India has deposited its instrument of ratification of the Paris Agreement with the United Nations," the United Nations said in a statement on October 2.
The deal, agreed by nearly 200 countries in Paris in December 2015, aims to slash greenhouse-gas emissions by shifting away from fossil fuels to limit global warming to "well below" two degrees Celsius compared to preindustrial times.
The Paris deal will come into force after at least 55 countries ratify it. The countries that have joined must also produce at least 55 percent of global emissions.
India accounts for around 4.5 percent of global greenhouse-gas emissions.
The Paris agreement received a boost last month after the United States and China, the world's two biggest emitters, submitted their approvals to the United Nations.
