Britain and Iran have appointed envoys to revive diplomatic ties that were broken off after a mob angry over sanctions stormed the British Embassy in Tehran in 2011.
Britain's Foreign Office on November 11 named the head of its Iran department as its new nonresident charge d'affaires to Tehran.
The Foreign Office said in a statement that Ajay Sharma will take up the post immediately. Sharma will be based in Britain but will travel regularly to Tehran.
Meanwhile, Iran's Mehr news agency said Iran had named Mohammad Hassan Habibollah as a nonresident charge d'affaires to Britain.
The moves reflect a thaw in relations between Iran and the West since Hassan Rohani was elected president of Iran in June, replacing hard-liner Mahmud Ahmadinejad.
