Iran President To Meet With Nazarbaev

Iranian President Hasan Rohani is on an official visit to Kazakhstan and due to meet with President Nursultan Nazarbaev.

Rohani was due to meet with Nazarbaev at the Kazakh president's residence near Astana to discuss a range of issues that include security in the region, the status of the Caspian Sea ahead of a summit of littoral state leaders in Russia later this month, and expanding trade between Kazakhstan and Iran as the two countries and Turkmenistan prepare to open a railway route connecting the three.

Rohani arrived in Kazakhstan on September 8 in his first trip to the Central Asian nation as president.

His first foreign trip as president was a visit to Kyrgyzstan in September 2013 for a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a security grouping comprising China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

Rohani is due to travel on to Tajikistan, where the SCO holds a summit late this week.

Iran has observer status in the SCO.
