Iran Seizes Indian Oil Tanker Carrying Iraqi Crude

Iran's Revolutionary Guards have reportedly detained an Indian oil tanker carrying Iraqi crude oil.

"The Times of India" reported on August 15 that an Iranian Navy ship stopped the oil tanker "MT Desh Shanti" in international waters and "coerced" it into the Iranian port of Bandar Abbas late on August 14.

Iranian authorities have reportedly claimed the Indian vessel was leaking oil and polluting Iran's territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

India has reduced the amount of oil it imports from Iran after the United States requested New Delhi cut its purchases of Iranian crude.

The UN and Western countries have imposed economic sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program because of suspicions it could be used to develop atomic weapons.
