U.S. President Barack Obama has spoken by telephone with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah to discuss the interim nuclear deal between Iran and six world powers.
American allies Saudi Arabia and Israel have been among the countries most concerned about Iran’s potential development of a nuclear weapon.
The White House said in a statement that Obama told the Saudi monarch that it will be important for Iran to follow through on commitments made in the deal reached last weekend in Geneva.
The statement added that Obama and the king agreed to talk regularly as negotiations continue.
Under the interim agreement, due to last at least six months, Iran has agreed to curb parts of its nuclear program. In return, some international sanctions imposed on the Islamic republic are to be lifted.
